Deuteronomy 25:1-3

Suppose two persons have a dispute and enter into litigation, and the judges decide between them, declaring one to be in the right and the other to be in the wrong. If the one in the wrong deserves to be flogged,1 the judge shall make that person lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of lashes proportionate to the offense.2 Forty lashes may be given but not more; if more lashes than these are given, your neighbor will be degraded in your sight.3
1 Interesting, considering that flogging hasn't been mentioned as a punishment in any recent verse and is only rarely mentioned at all in the Law.
2 Which is decided by the judges, I assume?

3 An early version of the prohibition against “cruel and unusual punishment” found in law today.

Take-home: The extent of corporal punishment in court decisions is limited to spare the punished.
